Duo deal to open 20 upscale multiplexes

U.K. exhibition loop Curzon Cinemas has inked a pact with entertainment retailer HMV to open up to 20 upscale multiplexes in urban center locations.

Move follows the trial of their first site, the all-digital three-screen plex and cafe-bar, HMVCurzon, which opened in October above an existing HMV store in Wimbledon.

The companies plan to roll out between two and five sites a year.

Philip Knatchbull, CEO of parent group Curzon Artificial Eye, said: “The HMV at Wimbledon clearly demonstrated there is a need for high-quality, high-tech cinemas with cafe-bar spaces, delivering varied films and programming that’s tailored to the demands of the local community.”

Programming will span both Hollywood blockbusters and indie award winners, as well as live broadcasts of opera, concerts and sporting events.

Curzon already operates five upscale arthouses in London, while its sister company Artificial Eye distribs indie fare. HMV is the U.K. and Ireland’s leading music, film and games retail specialist with 280 stores.
